Post Greg Hog$und & Gary Mc$raw self proclaimed hacking expert..
Never noticed this until now, although it has been out for over a year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34-UCGc6SfE&videos=iCiWDFtaMsk&playnext_from=TL&playnext=1
A self promoting video about Greg Hoglund's "Exploiting Games" book.

After reading some of his stuff from time to time, and after watching that.. What an egotistical jerk!
And a guy that oddly looks like a cross between Quentin Tarantino and Corey Feldman.
Also this Gary McGraw guy also self proclaimed "expert"..

"Expert" because they call them self one. In reality, just some of the most vocal.
Just because you label things with a fancy buzzword and titles, and then do a lot grandstanding doesn't make you the
inventor and the expert, does it?
His books should be called: "exploiting the public", or "exploiting the fool" (of those unknowledgeable in the area).

As if he is the only one doing this, as if he discovered these things him self..
Not like dozens if not hundreds were doing it before you even thought about it Greg!
His egotistical arrogance leads him to think he is the only one, and the best one at it on top of that!

So, you figured out how to teleport in a game?
Yea? I got news for you pal, we called it "teleporting" (or something else) a long time ago!
You can call it (drum roll please) "telehack" or invent more buzz words, but it was probably done a long time before you even thought of it.
Long before there was even a WOW.. For instance UO that was out in 1997 that's about eight years before that you
%%^&!
(Incidentally, my own wording I call "zone teleport", or "interzone teleport" for zone to zone teleports, and "intrazone teleport" for inside zone ones. Wee!, now where is my book?)

Most intelligent people would use teleporting to their own advantage just to travel around the world to help them level and farm stuff. Keeping it low profile so they wouldn't invoke the ire, at the least the attention of the developer and not lose the ability, and, or, accounts.
Not to use such things to greif players with.
You out and out say, how fun it is to teleport in and out on players and kill them??
Calling other players "tadpoles"?? The arrogance, the irresponsibility, the stupidity..

Yours truly, had near complete GM (Game Master) commands in more then one game at my disposal in the past.
Completely legal, through reverse engineering (with no network hacking).
But I never used these or anything else to grief players.
I used it for my self, not even trusting "me and my buddies" on the exact details.
If you (Greg) found something half as interesting you would certainly make sure everyone knew about it.

Today I will proclaim myself: the Expert, leading technologist, the Guru, President, King, Jesus and the god of all I survey.

In the end I suppose it's all planed and he is not so stupid.
He has foresight enough to turn game hacking and malware construction into something profitable by selling books, "security" consultation, seminars, government contracts, what ever..
It was wise to ride the most common denominator WOW (World Of Warcraft). To a lot of people WOW is the first, and only MORPG ever created.
And, in some way have admire him for having the gall to want to be the "Microsoft" of the MOG game hacking world.
Making and promoting big buzzwords for things he most certainly didn't invent (but apparently thinks he did),
publicly promoting him self to get people call him "the" expert, etc.

There's a good reason there wasn't much technological information in that book. There wasn't any, or the some that there was had been extremely small and useless to the masses.

Yea, I'm a little interested in seeing it, but I figured it was like the other book "rootkit" one.
I have that one, found it interesting but very shallow, lacking detailed information.

Kind of comical watch the Gary McGraw video about the EG book.
He says he hasn't played games since like 1981.
WTF? Lets write a book on MORPG hacking then..

Listen to Hoglund stumble over words about "nProtect".
I find it strange he's supposed to be an expert but from the way he talks, it he's never encountered it or any other anti-hack system.
How can you not have encountered any of these (other then "warden", which is more hack detection not really a "anti-hack" system) if you are an expert "MORPG hacker"?

I think he's just one the the people that's spent loads of time in WoW related reverse engineering and botting forums and sites and since being submersed in this world he feels liek he's gained a deep knowledge of it, which he may or may not have. But on the surface he doesn't seem to know much, just that he's researched what others know.

I can say flat out I know a little, if only a bit more then the common leecher. But you don't see me writing a book.

I would really be interested in technical documents on computer related things, but after the basics the only things still technical are programming books.

Your absolutely right, he did stumble over his words. He couldn't know much about non-wow anti-hack systems, because while gameguard always updated giving people a hard time... punk buster was always easily defeated, and without knowing what your doing, but encouraging 3rd party closed source anti-hack programs is fruitless. A 3rd party open source model could possibly be more secure, and update faster, but that's a lot of lost money in a big market, which he was right about.

But a company working on a product for a specific game, has to spend time making updates to the anti-hack. Being a closed source environment, you have very few people (who probably do specialized in the subject of this thread, or at least know enough) who update this. So the big limiter is time, generally two weeks to a month on most games, if not more. That leaves HUGE gaps of time where complete chaos can happen in the game, before the game owners know what hit them.

The reason this guy will and probably is making good money on the topic is he's the type of person who can swoon others into believing they are not as smart as him, and NEED his help to improve there game. All you need to do is reason why your anti-hack service is better then X and Y's service and your good. To most people saying you've done interviews and written books, and bragging about how your so smart is enough... Because people running companies, and most specifically EVEN the software development department may not understand the mechanics behind game hacking and reverse engineering. So I think that is why most companies take the easy way out and pay for services like GameGuard.

Interesting.. just found this out today because of a automated security warning (from a 3rd pary in Russia) about user accounts at "Rootkit.com". And it looks like site is down for the count.

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/an ... s_5000.php

Apparently Greg and his companies got "owned".
Which probably particularly embarrassing for a self proclaimed "security expert" with a supposed "security company" with government contracts et al.

Some here rhere, or in my reading today (you can Google this stuff) the screen shot of the emails from social engineer to a admin/worker at HBGary will make you laugh.
The guy basically gave them Greg's account just for the asking.

Also an interesting reads in deed on the backlash of the some information found in the leaks:

More. Poor guy G-man's (or just 'G' as they like to call Greg) CEO employee of their side company.
Just brutal, but funny (warning adults only):
